quick FM update

I've found a workaround for the barnacle problem I've been having. For those that care, if you go into noclip mode then clip through a wall while looking at them, it seems to fix the problem for the remainder of the demo. This does add an extra step and may make transitions between load zones even less smooth, but it does seem to be a solution for now.

I'm going to try and get two more Freeman's Mind episodes out this month to make up for the delay on the last one. Since there's lagtime between when I'm done and when it actually gets uploaded, I can't promise anything, but that's my goal.

Well, it's great that there will be some new FM episodes =), but u said that the website is almost finished and that u won't do any episodes before its update, isn't it? But I'd rather see 2 more episodes before, because it's amazing!
I'm pretty sure that u will stop the next episode at the beginning of the next chapter (in the elevator, just before the military), I really want to see Freeman's reaction to their attacks.
Well, good luck!

And now the glitches are part of the solution :D.

nice ross, but wat about cp?

Sounds good Ross. Whatever you need to continue. We're still here for ya.

And yes- thanks for the update. Best of luck!

That's a big relief. Comparing having to wait a little bit longer while you eventually solve a problem, to having to wait for... ...say Merry Melony to be continued, I'm just glad that the series can continue.

Excellent news that you've fixed the barnacle bug (with another bug it seems). Looking forward to future episodes.

What you can do is stop and use the workaround by clipping at the wall right before you see the barnacle. Edit this part out of the video. Then try and transition the fade so that it looks like you didn't actually move.

Rubber Ducky: Basically everything went dead as soon as I made that last post (go figure), but work's started up on it again.

karanjhala guy: Basically I'm focusing on getting more videos out at the moment rather than piss more people off by spending more time on CP. I plan to go back to after these episodes.

Dirdle: No, they're not. It's still annoying, I just found a workaround for it.

Two episodes in one month? . . . It's times like these I'm reminded why I became an internet surfer, TO SHOW INTERNET SERIES WHOS BOSS, YEA!

Heh, keep em coming Scott this is some of the best stuff on the net.

Good luck getting your new site up!

How is an episode of Freeman's Mind made?

Dirdle said...

I meant, one glitch had worked to negate another, even if it's still difficult.

braddas said...

take your time mush, the videos are worth the wait.

Update: I just remembered the previous context of the line in whichever episode it was; your interpretation, Ross, of my quote is actually easier to arive at than mine. My bad.

Can you post up FM in high quality .mp4? I'm having problems converting WMVs. Great series BTW.

Good luck with FM; it's my favorite web-series. =)

That's Machinima for you. Keep up the great work.

I personally don't care if the transitions are a bit jumpy, I've seen some pretty bad machinima, and if you persistantly odd, quirky and generally funny I really don't think anyone can complain.

Ross, your Civil Protection videos have changed my life. One day I was just surfing around Facebook and I found a link to one of your videos...and the rest is history. Your videos brighten my day and allow me to laugh even when I'm terribly upset. I've made all of my friends watch "Friday" and since then they were also hooked on your series. We constantly pass notes to each other with a quote from one of your episodes on it during class to one another. You have made high school fun again for us. I look forward to your next episode of Civil Protection and I would like to thank you on the behalf of my friends: Crystal, Shelby, Erika, Olivia, and many more due to your great work.

Ross! you're genius, man)) keep up at your great work on FM:-)

Jeremy: I don't have software setup to encode in .mp4, but I could consider it down the line.

Votekick: I'm basically ignoring them since they are level load transitions I can't really fix. FM is generally going to get less polish than CP.

Karen: Hey cool, female fans, I don't get many of those! I'm glad you like the videos, the next CP should definitely be a crowd pleaser, I don't think many will be disappointed by it.

"I can't promise anything, but that's my goal."
so does that mean your goal is to not promise anything?

Pfft, you totally have female fans.

Not to seem like a mooch or anything like that, but I was wondering if you needed an extra voice actor for any reason? Obviously, I don't expect pay or anything like that, I just do some voices from time to time, and would love to help if you're ever doing a Team Fortress thing...or really anything. I quite handily impersonate the Soldier, the Scout, and others. A HUGE fan of your work! I've gotten in trouble for laughing in work more times than I can count, and loved every moment of it. :)

dude awesome work bro, please keep them coming, i want to see episodes stemming all the way into HL2 episode 2 if you don't run outta jokes by then lol.

Keep it up man. You havent produced a bad episode yet so I can wait as long as it is gonna take.

I recently found your videos when procrastinating, browsing YouTube. Most of the stuff you find on the Internet that people say are funny really are not. 95% of it is either downright plagiarized, unoriginal, or not funny in the first place. The other 4% is "chuckle to yourself" funny. This is the kind of stuff that gets rave reviews everywhere (the 95% get insincere "lols" and subscriptions on YouTube). Freeman's Mind is part of that one percent of content that is creative and actually makes yourself laugh out loud. You took a game that was very well heard of, yet not everybody has played (HL2 is well heard of and everybody has played), so to many people each event in the game is new. Even to the people who have played it, the humorous dialog makes it fresh. You also chose a game with a very high number of options for interactions with the environment, making the whole series seem believable, while not using a non-linear game that would require much boring wandering around (Far Cry 2).

The dialog itself remains consistent with a single personality throughout all of the episodes (excellent choice of personality. The contrast with the type of environment is awesome), without being too over-the-top. My one gripe is that he still seems to be super-human and fearless, but this is easily forgivable due to the nature of linear video games.

The editing is seamless. The only production errors I really noticed were some cuts where the camera seems to shift. These were few, and I predict they were either points where new parts of the map were loading, or you had to go back and refilm because you died or misrecorded. The video is synced with the audio, and the actions of the character on-screen correspond with the changes in mood, attitude, and spikes of excitement in the voice.

I want MOAR.

QwertyTSecond said...

So, how long do you intend to run FM for? Will it span all of HL1, because I don't think anyone's ever undertaken anything like that.
Thank you so much for creating both series, and all the best with future productions.

Cama Zots said...

Dude, I can't wait until the next episode. I'm going to this site almost everyday now. Don't worry about the bugs though, I didn't notice them until you started pointing them out. Freeman's Mind is just one of those things that I look forward to.

The end of the month is getting closer pretty fast :) I hope You will keep your promise :)
and by the way... Epic job there on both, CP and FM, keep up the great work, srsly :D

Good to see a lot of positive comments. Keep it up there, Ross. Pushing to the end of the month though, I hope you can handle the weight of such work. :P

best thing since concerned comic

Ross Scott said...

Scood: Dude don't act surprised if you quote something out of context to the dialogue that comes before it and thus get a different interpretation out of it.

Jessi: Well it's not getting me any dates

E: Sorry, I'm already backlogged with people I've already recorded for future episodes. I may have stuff open up in the future however.

Anonymous guy: Well thanks for the detailed analysis. I personally feel I have too much "chuckle to yourself" content in the videos, but the format of FM is too constraining for every minute to be a slam dunk. I mainly picked HL because I was already using Source and he's known for being a silent protagonist. And yeah I think his personality is consistent, though I've made him kind of a basket case. Also I plan to blame his super-human ability on the suit. They keep praising it in the game anyway. The editing cuts are unavoidable due to level load transitions. I'm just ignoring it since this isn't supposed to be a top production.

QwertyTSecond: Who knows man

Cama Zots: Well in general I'm not the speediest about updates, although you can expect some stuff within the next week.
