FREEMAN'S MIND: EPISODE 9

Youtube

640x480 WMV (87MB)

Well here's the latest FM episode after a lot of delays. This one has several bugs that I basically just ignored. There are missing bloodstains, the barnacle problem is back, and one of the signs wasn't glowing like it's supposed to. One viewer has told me it's not even possible to finish HL Source without cheating because of a bug, I guess I'll find out.

This is going to be the LAST video release before the new website, we're getting really close now, I hope to have something semi-functional in about a week on that front. After that focus will be on the next CP episode, but I may do another FM first just to make up for the delay on this one.

I remarked that u use much more swearings and u are REALLY pissed off that time (I would do the same if I was Gordon), lol.

Great job Ross.

It does look a bit rushed in some parts ,( transition between combat and non combat events)

But the jokes are still great. It is amazing how you much fresh material there are in each episode.

There is more originality in one episode then in whole day worth of television broadcasts.

You missed 2 shotgun already, I think you going to drive some halflife fan boys to hysteria.

I understand the logic behind it,a regular person can't carry crowbar, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, revolver, crossbow, rocket luncher, grenades, and other weapons all at once(like Rambo or terminator). It does add realism but it would be interesting to see "Gordon" react to a new weapon.

("Here is my BOOMSTICK you primitive screw heads" or something like that.)

You sir are a gift to humanity! I thank you!

Awesome. To tell you the truth, Ross, its the best one since the Frog people episode(Episode 3 I think). Now I have to wait for the new CP episode. (Actually, I think its four)

Good luck on your new website.

I didn't think it was possible, but this episode was better than the last one, which I had considered the best one yet.
Keep up the great work and PLEASE, in the name of all that is decent, P-L-E-A-S-E take the bloody shotgun!
I know that most people think it is impossible for Gordon to carry all of those weapons at once, but I think that thanks to his suit, it is. I mean, it's high tech and I'm sure it is capable of making all the things Gordon carries feel lighter and easier to... well... carry.

Anonymous said...

sweeeeet, gr8 job!

Ross Scott said...

Even though I'm trying to make this slightly more realistic, I'm basically just going to ignore his ability to carry a bunch of weapons at once. From what I remember of the game, I'm going to need them.

And for what it's worth, the writing here is the easiest part. I could probably make these once a day if I didn't have to voice act and time everything.

Absolutely hilarious. Keep up the good work :)

HEy Ross

I just checked out your youtube video

Heh. Once again, you make my day. You certainly are funny, Ross.

Wow, I really loved this episode.

I actually found myself getting lost watching the action and not thinking "awww its almost over"

I was surprised when it was over, It felt like it went on for a long time. Very funny as always.

It also recently inspired me to try and replay HL1-HL2EP2 in a week or two. 4 days in and completed HL:S,BS and OF :p

It was cool playing through HL the entire way and wondering what the Freeman was thinking (I had him talking in my head the whole time) Especially when we start to see Gman behind locked doors and stuff.

I also had the same sort of commentary running in my head for OF and BS, Barney being pissed off about having such a lousy job/day and Adrian Shepard about always missing his escape because of the G-Man.

Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the upcoming site. Can't wait to see it.

Have you ever seen boom de ya da? can you make a civil protection boom de ya da thing please? :D

Awesomw, as always, Mr. Scott. ;) So many great moments in this episode. Thumbs-up from me!

That was funny

"Nah your on your own chump" hahaha

"I got more blood on me than a ax murder."

Anonymous said...

best one yet!!!

Anonymous said...

I agree with AleksanderK, this episode looks a bit rushed, but definetely funny as always.
But hey, I can still hear that shotgun crying because you didn't pick it up, damn it! XD
By the way, I finished HL:S more or less two years ago and I didn't need any kind of cheats...
Can't wait to see Gordon meeting the Marines... I hope at least he will pick up the MP5! :p
Keep up your awesome work!

You're so awesome, love your videos :)

Hey man, keep up the good work, Freeman's Mind especially. It is quite possibly the best machinima I've ever seen, and I have made several machinima vids myself. Good luck, man, keep it up!

I can't wait until he runs into the HECUs...
Great job, Ross. Keep 'em coming!

Hehe this was really good ;) More FM fast!!

Never thought the line "I'm from a mineral rich planet" could be funny until this. Nice work again, inspired me to annoy the wife by replaying HL2 with a west of England commentary

p.s. Hope the positive commentary keeps morale up when all the "you've not done a new episode in three hours" bitching kicks off

Sending positive energy to the animators through comments.

Excellent work, and the new episode reminded me of a few chortle-worthy moments in the first half of the original Half-Life. Why couldn't those headcrab zombies hear their friends being shot up?

Anonymous said...

Good job on this one again, every episode is great. I didn't actually notice any of the glitches or problems in the video when I watched it.

I'm finding the F-bombs are getting a bit too frequent now (I'm not big on hearing it in videos all the time) but the first video freeman used an F-bomb in was funny because he was getting so bombarded by so much, and so stressed by it all that it fit right in.

Keep up the good work, I agree with the others, the content is always fresh and hilarious, and I loved the brutality with those naughty headcrabs not taking their seats.

Anonymous said...

Good episode. If I had to criticise (and the voices in my head tell me I must) I would say I prefer FM to have shorter episodes (than CP, in general). But otherwise, good work, with some very memorable moments ("Class is in session! Take your seats!").

Anonymous said...

Awesome episode as always! It was nice to see the episode longer in length. I hope you finish your website soon :)

Anonymous said...

Once again you have made my day Ross. All the best with your new site.

On the subject of limiting Freeman's arsenal, if you are going to restrict him to carrying two or so weapons, how about 'swapping' some guns for others?

Such as when Freeman comes across the SMG for the first time, he picks it up in exchange for his pistol? Something like 'Is that a Submachine Gun? Sweet, time for an upgrade!'

So even though you are carrying both the SMG and pistol in game, you could only show him using the SMG, completing the illusion of him dropping the pistol.

This way you get to use the more powerful guns on larger enemies (the Nihilanth for example), and get the fanboys off your back.

This stuff keeps on getting better and better.

"And that means you too Billy"

Great video as usual! Really enjoying the Freeman's Mind series. I can't wait to see Freeman's reaction to the rocket engine test chamber...

Nice episode, though i can now see how truly long it will take to get through the whole game. I also think i got a good idea on how to get around some of those lengthy parts with not much potential for any good dialogue. You end one episode with something like "man... this is going to take a looooooong time" You start the next episode with him escaping something (or killing it). "Dam, i hope i never have to do that again" -cue that classical song that gradually gets faster as we watch little clips of freeman fighting enemies and hearing stuff like "Die already!" "THAT HURTS!" "Oh come on..." "Hey whats this?" behind the music. the snippets will be only the best kills and best moments for dialogue by freeman.

Oh! For the train part! That would be a hassle to film for an entire episode. Show clips of him crashing "STUPID MINI TRAIN!" and when he passes those areas where guys come out to shoot you "WHOS SHOOTING ME?!?!". Then you go back to the present with him saying something like "Man, it was like a disney ride gone bad. Really bad." Then move on.

PS: Sorry if i took the idea too far, but it all started coming to me once the idea started rolling.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if this has asked or answered before, really sorry if it has.

If and when you get to the end of Half-Life, do you think you will continue FM into Half-Life 2?

Otto said...

Dylan: Yep, this is asked very frequently. The same usual response is that there isn't any decision yet and it's way too far ahead to start planning.

It would be interesting to have it interfere with the Civil Protection story though. :P

Hey Ross, Love all your work keep it up!

I have tried using Source recorder with HL:S but when ever I try to play back what I have recorded I recieve an error and my game dies. Have you had any experience with this?

Anonymous said...

All right, enough of this, I'm getting some coffee.

http://nostalgia.planethalflife.gamespy.com/halflife/cuttings/cgw_june98b.jpg

Heh, I liked the funny shit Gordon says while smashing headcrabs. Take your seats! No comment!

Otto said...

Same problem, Drew. Though the error message occurs on heaps of different problems and you'll learn a lot more by reading about the message and following support instructions. Still, even after getting a new motherboard, I've never managed to fix this. It simply doesn't happen on some machines.

Anonymous said...

Ross I just want to say that your Source Machinima Cinematography guide is great, the motion blur effect is exactly what I've been looking for, I can't wait to test it for myself. I tried using Sony Vegas to get the effect but it's far too time consuming and tedious to set up and render to make it practical for use on a whole film, this new method should make the whole job a lot easier, faster and give me a far superior result.

Ross Scott said...

Everyone: thanks for all the positive feedback, I'll get a new episode as soon as I can.

Drew: Sorry, I've had weird bugs, but not that kind.

Chris: Wow, I haven't seen that picture of Freeman before. That's neat that he has the coffee, but I have to say he looks FLAMING in that.

Master Chris: Hey glad you liked it. Yeah I'm really happy with the results of using that kind of motion blur processing. It's not fast at all, but at least you can queue up your jobs in Virtualdub and let it run in the background.

Keth said...

Ross, you shouldn't really worry about the bugs which I really didn't notice in ep9 and probably not just me.
It's all about ideas not how it's done. :)

Good luck with your new website and hopefully new episodes of FM.

Oh I forgot to add these in my last comment:

In the guide you say to record at 16 bit sample rate in Audacity. Is it just to keep file sizes down or is it a Source engine compatibility thing? Surely it's better for quality if you use 32 bit float.

Also I have found (at least in garrys mod) that being in noclip while recording a shot will stop the annoying bug where the camera moves when you resume demo playback. I haven't tested if it works in any of the other Source games but it may help you.

Anonymous said...

Great episode, but I think it'd be funny if you made a comment on the transition from morning, to night when Freeman finally finishes the labyrinth of rails on the level "On A Rail".

"What the hell? It was 8:30 this morning when I arrived at work, I was down there for ten hours? No, it's gotta be daylight savings time. Man I REALLY need to get a watch. One that self synchronizes too, so I don't have to do it myself."

Unknown said...

Can't believe I just now found these episodes! I've enjoyed them quite a bit.

Just out of curiosity, are you a fan of MST3K? Or the Thumb movies by Steve Oedekerk? Something about these Freeman's Mind episodes reminds me of those.

Perfection. Utter Perfection. I can't imagine how this can get any better, it's just so funny.

Is this sort of how you felt when that barnacle grabbed you?

Hello, I ran across a thread on a Garry's Mod forum, stating that you can record movies in-game, without useing an out-of-game recorder.

The thread is found here: http://mcbuild.forumarena.com/mcbuild-thread565.html

I do not own Half-Life : Source, so I don't know if this command exists in the older Source Engine.

Hope this helps.

Unknown said...

Hehe, nice one, great as always Ross, about the problem with Freeman carrying the weapons, this is my idea:

He can carry the pistol and the magnum in his waist, a shotgun/mp5 and another weapon on his back, and his crowbar on his leg.

And for the Barnacle problem, that bug was actually useful, it made it look like the Barnacle actually surprised Gordon

Anonymous said...

ok so in genreal barring any unseen delays it takes about 2 months to make a FM epiosde and 6 months for a CP
little so but i can wait

Ross Scott said...

ChosenCube: No. If I only had to focus on one thing, Freeman's Mind could come out every 3 days to a week, and Civil Protection would be anywhere from a week to maybe 4 months depending on how complicated the episode was. The problem is I work on both series and have other stuff going on in my life. If I get more animation help, Civil Protection could go a lot faster.

Anonymous said...

Sorry Scott but I posted a question earlier but it didn't get answered:

In the guide you say to record at 16 bit sample rate in Audacity. Is it just to keep file sizes down or is it a Source engine compatibility thing? Surely it's better for quality if you use 32 bit float.

Also I have found (at least in garrys mod) that being in noclip while recording a shot will stop the annoying bug where the camera moves when you resume demo playback. I haven't tested if it works in any of the other Source games but it may help you.

Ross Scott said...

Master Chris: Sorry, I missed it since it was on a an older comment. I don't know of many programs that use 32 bit float mode, 16 bit should be fine, it's what CD audio uses. I doubt you'll be able to hear the difference between the two. And that could be helpful information about the noclip thing, I haven't confirmed that in other games though.
