FREEMAN'S MIND - EPISODE 6

Youtube

640 x 480 WMV (62MB)

Well here's the latest episode of Freeman's Mind. I'm happier with the pacing on this one and it doesn't feel quite as crammed as the last one. This one has a little more language, but Freeman has to put up with more in this episode too. As long as people are interested in it, I hope to keep doing a lot more of these. I plan to have another one out sometime this month, then a new Civil Protection episode either at the end of the month or else early January.

If you finish all of Half-Life 1, 2 and all the episodes, I will bake you a cake kind sir.

This one is one of my favorites so far.

Getting trapped underwater to get past a metal grate is very smupid.

Anonymous said...

Great, as always; I loved the underwater bit. =D

Anonymous said...

Wow totally awesome!

This is the best Machinima series ever made after civil protection. Great Job!

FREEMAN'S MIND ROCKS!!!

Anonymous said...

Suck on this you jumping boogers!

lol nice work Ross keep it up

Anonymous said...

Incredible. Your Freeman's Mind stuff is by far your best work.

Unknown said...

Definitely make more. These are great, even non-Half-Life fans like it.

Anonymous said...

I really have to say I actually enjoy watching Freeman's Mind more than most of the Civil Protections series, even that I know your huge effort on that one. I'm just saying that if it'll give you more time to concentrate on FM, I'd definitely encourage you to slow down on creating CP-episodes, even though I really love that too.

Thanks for another great episode.

Otto said...

Yeah, this one was excellent and I also loved the underwater bit. Great work!

Anonymous said...

This was absolutely great, like all the previous ones so far. I love these videos and so do all my friends, and they're not even Half Life fans. =D

Anonymous said...

"As long as people are interested in it" ... The interest will be there! Don't worry about that! I very much look forward to seeing this all the way through HL2 and the episodes, no matter how long it takes.

And like anonymous, it's like a birthday present just for me! Hooray.

Anonymous said...

Great episode.
Keep it up!

Anonymous said...

wow this was awesome

Anonymous said...

These videos are OUTSTANDING!!!

Keep at 'em, I'm sure everyone else here likes them too!

Anonymous said...

If you could make them somewhat longer, it'd be nice, as (in my opinion) the five minute length doesn't really reconcile itself all that well with the month-long period of waiting.

Probably hard to make, though. Rest assured that it's hilarious and I like the the realistic spin you put on Freeman's actions; in the video game we just see "the platform has collapsed, and now we take the unorthodox, more dangerous route" in a matter of seconds, whereas here it's more of an organic process for the narrator.

Definitely keep making them (faster.)

Anonymous said...

Best thing EVER. Excellent work. Keep it comming. Respect.

Firstly, I got here from Chris' blog, The 1Fort.

Next! I really enjoy Freeman's Mind, it is humorous to hear the inner thinkings of someone else's interpretation of Freeman, as when I played the game (around the 21st or 25th time I played through at least) I had a much different interpretation than this. I felt Freeman would have most definitely gone completely mad after the "Barrel Ride" in the beginning, and I then began to systematic murder of everyone and everything I came across as soon as they posed to no longer be useful to me. Ah, good times...

With Opposing Force, which I found to be a bit boring compared to Half Life, though much more interesting to look at, I decided around the 6th play through that Shepard was, in fact, not a MARINE but a G-Man agent sent to return all the Zen creatures back, so I used the Displacer Weapon on all the creatures using cheat codes. Sure, it was cheating, but it was quite a bit entertaining. I then hacked the game and did the same thing with normal Half-Life playing as Shepard. I still murdered everyone of course.

This last Episode was a bit bland, if you ask me, and you missed quite a bit of potential content, such as the Scientist crawling up the vent and being eaten/massacred right in the beginning and a palmed off confrontation with the G-Man, plus a lot of ammo you walked by. Just seemed like a bit cheap, if you ask me.

Wow I wasn't expecting another so soon, awesome work!

"This suit does NOT protect against gravity"

Looking forward to more FM

Gah, a lot to respond to. Thanks to everybody who likes the episode.

Birthday people: Yeah, mine's coming up soon too. I hope to finish the series before I'm Gordon's age!

Anonymous guy: I think some people might change their mind if I can ever flesh out some of the episode ideas I have for CP. However I can see where this might appeal to internet crowds more. It requires a much shorter attention span, will have more consistent action, plus I shout a lot.

Anonymous guy: I agree, a month for 5 minutes sucks. Part of the problem is that I have a lot more going on besides FM in the background, but I will increase the pace. The time length depends a lot on where the next good jumping-off spot is. The next one WILL be out sooner. Also I'm glad you like the semi-realism spin.

DeCreaux: Look, this game is huge. If I stop at every single event, it's going to take me even longer. Freeman's dragging his feet compared to a regular player as it is, and I have a lot to get through. The scientist getting scooped up into the vent had some potential, but he had a co-worker just standing there mindlessly while it got sprayed on him, lowering immersion some. Plus it's not like that's the last scientist he'll see killed. And yeah, I skipped ammo caches and I've tweaked damage values. I'm trying to approach the game from a semi-believable perspective and to me a regular person would be most concerned with just getting out of there rather than exploring every area.

Matt L.: I didn't put your post up because you're right, you stumbled onto one of my ideas for the series, so I didn't want to spoil it for evryone else. However I plan to do much more with that than what you described, I think people will like it.

Another very high-quality episode. Well done, especially with getting Freeman through puzzles without any feeling of contrivance (Contrivedness? Contrivity? Contrivia? I like contrivia, even if it isn't right). Weakness...hmm...maybe...I'd have expected Freeman to go a little more psycho with a gun, but then, there hasn't really been that much call to.

I think the greatest strength of both FM and CP is really their resounding lack of major flaws, but then, I might just not be seeing them because I like them so much. Again, well done on both series (Series? Serieses? Serii?)

Anonymous said...

Nice job, Freeman just can't get a break, can he?

Anonymous said...

Very good Ross, and salutations from Romania. Keep it up, these are really funny. I can hardly wait for a civil protection episode. :)

Anonymous said...

Please keep making these.

Awesome! I'd expected another CP episode, but this is almost as good. Nice job!

I love this series. I think you really capture Freeman's personality. I also like how you turned off the HUD, and sometimes the weapons to make it seem like Gordon is using both hands. I hope you continue this series, as well as the other ones.

Haha, nice video there. Freeman's Mind has almost caught up to Civil Protection in episode numbers, so it's great everybody else loves them.

Brilliant as always. Still, I didn't find the delivery of "No!" very effective around 0:40 (the first teleport). The rest had me rofling, though.

nice job with the special FX when gordon wuz underwater

Anonymous said...

I must say, overall, that I enjoy Freeman's Mind more than Civil Protection. This may be simply the fact that I didn't care all too much for "Oil's Well" or simply that you havent put one out in a while. I know more work is going into Civil Protection and that Noesis took up much of your time but, as it stands, I believe most of the crowd of harping seals yelling at you would agree...keep producing Freeman's Mind.

Another terrific episode!
All your episodes always make me
feel good. ^_^)b

Anonymous said...

I died laughing. Repeatedly. Definitely, definitely continue. Please? :)

Anonymous said...

Best. Machinima series. EVER.

1 suggestion though: Get the half-Life: Source HD pack. The npc's and some areas will look a whole lote better.

Anonymous said...

Once again brilliant and I like the action in this one of how Gordon just keeps shooting aliens that show up in his way. (When Gordon gets to the part where he's has to jump crate to crate to get to the elevator that leads to the Office part, make him accidentally drop his gun, it would so funny.)

Anonymous said...

You just keep getting better! This episode is very funny and all very well done. Keep up the good work, you have to keep the series going!

Anonymous said...

please keep doing these they are the best

Anonymous said...

please ross please! keep on doing Freeman's Mind i love them and all of your stuff. and i will be for a long time trust me.

Anonymous said...

Dear Ross,

I have only recently been turned onto your works, but you are already one of my favorite producers, even though your works are few right now. Forget all the rest of the stuff you post here and focus on your machinimatic career, and do not try to alter your style. I know that we can expect many great things from you.

Alex Morton said...

Great episode - I wasn't expecting another so soon!

best half life machinima hands down, keep up the awesome work

Unknown said...

'No.'

I love Freeman's sudden ranting. 'No! Shut up! No one cares about your opinion!' I reckon it's just what an already maladjusted guy would do when under pressure and being assaulted by aliens. :D

Keep up the brilliant work!

I love Freeman's mind. Not to get all serious, but I was having a really depressing week and stumbling across your videos really cheered me up / had me in hysterics.

Keep it up!

oh hey man... i think u should either redo hl1 when the new virsion coms out or wait right now and work on cp until the updated sourece virsion comes out... itll be alot cooler and better looking... just a suggestion... if u took a break on this right now itd be fast and easy to redo the past 6 episodes.

Anonymous said...

hey ross,

had a thought: since it's christmas time, maybe you can release a christmas CP episode? even if it is as short as the What Is Machinima episode, i belive it would get people in a christmas mood and would be a great idea.

just a thought,
Matthew

Awesome stuff dude
Love the series can't wait for the next CP but take your time release it when you feel it's ready

Ross Scott said...

Wow I haven't seen this many comments since the April Fool's episode. I'll just reply to some of them:

Nemesis: I don't have the subtitles for these I'm afraid, but I'll be happy to host them if anyone makes them for the FM episodes.

Azeltir: Yeah I tried several times on that, it didn't come out quite how I wanted. I didn't want a panicky "no", just more of a knee-jerk reaction like he's brain's a bit scrambled.

Half-Lifer: I tried the HD pack back before I made episode 1 and found many of the animations were glitched with the new models. I'd rather not have them spaz out while filming.

Otto said...

Yeah, a lot of positive feedback. Good work on this excellent series.

Anonymous said...

I was wondering how do you shoot so well without cross hair.

Do you use aim bot or is there a way to record without recording cross hair?

Anonymous said...

Ross... dude... SERIOUSLY... U are a genius! These are awesome!

Anonymous said...

Ross, You are awesome

Freeman's Mind is the best!

I wonder how long it'll be for HL2.
IF you do HL2 anyway

Anonymous said...

Keep up the good work!

Otto said...

Yeah, Anonymous, he just records with all of it in-game, but turns it off once recording is in progress.

Nice one. My favorite in the series, keep it up. "...and then I'll start pissing blood. Thanks, Black Mesa!!" It's funny because you're saying what we're all thinking!

No noticing of the G-Man watching him. I wanna see Freeman freak out as he notices Mr. Blue suit peering over his should every five minutes.

Ross, you are GOD.
I can't wait to see what Freeman does when he meets up with the HECU... Or even better, goes to Xen. Yeah.
