FREEMAN'S MIND: EPISODE 8

Youtube

640x480 WMV (87MB)

Well here's the latest episode of Freeman's Mind. I got lucky with this one and demo recording worked without the barnacles going crazy. This is good because I was able to swap out some lines for the scientist at the end, something that wouldn't have been practical with just raw video recording. The barnacle problem is NOT SOLVED however, I simply got lucky with this map. My offer of getting in the credits for anyone who can solve the problem is ongoing. Also, the cattle prod story mentioned in this episode is not even an exaggeration, I knew someone who used to do that.

I plan to go back and focus on the next CP episode for now, but if the rest of production ends up taking a long time, I'll get another FM episode out to tide you over. Hopefully the new website will be finished before either one is done!

"What if the aliens teleport inside me!?!?"

What if the bugs teleport inside you! Then you would have to step on yourself!

Great job, your videos are the best machinima I see nowadays.

I think I rank that one as your top episode. The last one was meh, but this one was far superior. And of course, near the end, dumbass Freeman totally overlooks the shotgun XD.

Anonymous said...

Just out of curiosity, I was confused when you got shot by the turret and the scientest ran in, you ran into the room. You went to investigate what shot you and you turned back and the same scientest was there when he wasnt in the room when you initially ran in. How did he end up there with out gordon seeing? Every time i've played he always dies.

ROSS! That was great! Oh man...all of those lines were just straight-up funny and creative. Definitely worth 8+ minutes. (Worth a lot more than that, lemme tell you).

I have a question for you though Ross (yes, another question). Not sure if it's been asked:

How long would you say Freeman's mind takes compared to CP? I know CP takes longer, but how long in comparison (such as comparing the two with filming and polishing).

These stories during the episode are a great addition by the way. The squirrel one was crazy and some of these new ones (like the cattle prod) not just make you laugh but are an eye opener. I figured it would be a true story- people are crazy after all! (Not to call your friend crazy of course).

Thanks for reading XD. Take care.

Ross, you just made my day.
Seriously, I think I creamed when I saw this was up.
Godlike work man. I only wish I was a quarter as good as you.

Why didn't you get the shotgun at the "Dead End?"

Freemans Mind is the best man I wish the wait wasn't always so long between them but you cant rush perfection! Great episode the whole thing with the roach's was Hilarious.

Moonlup said...

Another excellent episode! Gordon's reaction to the cockroaches is priceless; glad to see I'm not the only one that goes out of my way to kill the little bastards.

I think my favorite moment is the firing in the air vent, though that's just one of many awesome bits.

Awesome episode, I was on youtube when machinima put it up last night XD

I can't wait until he meets the army guys who shoot him :P

Anonymous said...

brilliant... very funny indeed.
almost jumped when I saw you posted a new episode :)

I like it. Good balance between Freeman "figuring out" puzzles and wading through electrified water/ignoring health, armor and weapons, which adds to his character, I think.

Wait i have a question, when you record either CP or FM, do you use a game recorder (Fraps,GameCam,etc) or the built in source recorder? If you use a game recorder, which one? and the SR, dont you find it really annoying typing in commands all the time?

Ross Scott said...

SnappyCrunch: Yeah I think they got it back up, it pretty much happened just as I posted this.

Spog: Good, I thought this one wasn't as good as some of the others, but it had a few highlights.

Anonymous: The scientist apparently ran behind me, it just kind of happened that way.

UsodStallion: It all depends on what I'm doing. Varies from days to months.

Jay Are: To drive HL fans nuts.

Otto said...

No0b-0-rAmA, Source Recorder gives you much more flexibility and capability than Fraps, a you can replay the demo back to add or remove many things in the game and this is where Demo Smoother comes in use.

Anyone who's been doing it long enough will know you can punch in codes all the time without thinking about it, and it's really useful as you'll definitely want to change the commands from time to time.

This was genius, Ross. You really need to make more of these!

Black Mesa Source comes out this year. I call Dibs on making Freeman's Mind:Source. Think of it as a fan project.
Anyway, great episode as always.

Anonymous said...

"Why didn't you get the shotgun"

Because it's not someone playing half life, it's a humorous machinima taking place at Black Mesa.

The story has a "realistic" tone to it, with Freeman commenting on things that we didn't really noticed playing, like where do the crates go in the bottomless room ?

How could Freeman, in later episodes, carry a pistol, a shotgun, an MP5, and a bazooka all at once ?

Great job, Ross!

As always... awesome! You know, ever played System Shock 2 or Duke Nukem 3D? I don't think they have ANY machinma about them...

Anonymous said...

Hey Ross

Have you notice, if you even have facebook, that someone have made a fan group of your work?

Anonymous said...

In the previous episode didn't Gordon wish he were a bug so that he could climb on walls? And now he's just going around exterminating them on site.

He really has no consideration for his own crackpot theories :D

Ross Scott said...

John Killer118: Go for it, I might do HL2, but I'm not redoing this for the mod.

Anonymous people: You guys should really leave names if you want your questions answered, it's like talking to a collective otherwise. Also I wouldn't screw up something as good as SS2 with this, and I can't do Duke's voice. Oddly enough, I think I might be able to do Solid Snake's though.

5aga-m4n: Yeah Gordon is not terribly consistent, but I think that doesn't really conflict with his personality.

Anonymous said...

If not SS2 or DN3D... would you do Barney's Mind? Him having Dave's (awesome crazy train surfing CP officer) voice would rock totally.

And now I wonder what do the Combine do with zombie bodies? Dump them into a compost garbage container? for later use as fertilizer? Or maybe... WHO WANTS SOME BURGERS?!

Anonymous said...

i think the shotgun is going to be used later, but GREAT EPISODE!
tempting to shoot the scientists i know, also "You're all popcorn"
best line every

Otto said...

Heh, you've always told them to get names but it seems you're attracting newer users who haven't seen the older posts.

bloodshed: It's a console command you can toggle with the source recorder. You can search up Source Recorder and you'll see the commands, it's easier than asking.

RTerranM: I'd think they'd dump them in a container if they were to pile them up, or just burn them, and there's more evidence of that.

"Scheduled Chaos Theory"? Didn't see it before, I guess it was done - lab looks pretty chaotic ;)

One of the best episodes!

Anonymous said...

I can't remember a time where I haven't nearly been in tears and rolling around on the floor when viewing your work. Keep it up, bud.

Anonymous said...

You should create a movie when FM is done, I mean u should sell it on DVD, I'm sure it will work,
20/20 Excellent work!!!

Anonymous said...

Gordon Freeman is schizoprehnic!!!

Anonymous said...

Sorry to bother you, Ross, it's just that in your Choreography Guide, it suggests a link for the Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1 which does not work. The page cannot be found. Is there another place to get it, or am I screwed completely now?

Anonymous said...

Also, sorry, the directory with files created and files needed apparently does not exist (yes, I had the Source SDK) and in Hammer all I see on the 'camera' screen is a wire mesh, which is not suppossed to happen. Any ideas?

DT said...

RTerranM:They would burn them, then bury them. I caught some soldiers burying some burnt corpses in front of a house on a cliff on the coast.

Did you add extra sound effects to the vid? Or have thoes already been there, like the metal sound when he takes out the crowbar, or the sound of breaking glass when walking through the windows.

Anonymous said...

Really, really great job!!! There is still a long way to go, but the beginning is GREAT! I have also 2 questions: How do you record your videos (I mean which software)? and Do you add your speech during the game or you add it to the video after?

Otto said...

pdan4: Yeah, that was the scene I meant. Who knows if they were zombies though.

Otto said...

Kori: The metal clicking noises were actually recorded specifically for the crowbar, and a number of sound effects from the Half-Life games were used and mixed in after recording, so you probably wouldn't recognize all of them from Half-Life 1.

Radir said...

Awesome to the max!

Ross Scott said...

Anonymous guy: I don't know why Microsoft took down the link, but check on google, I think the 3rd link down for the same search has a copy. For your other questions you'll have to contact Noesis.

Kori: Most of the added sound effects for FM are done by Otto. I still do some of them, but it saves me a lot of time not having to hunt them down myself.

Make Barneys or Sheperds mind please(from HOMER)

Otto said...

Shh, there's people around here, Ross. :p Ah, you do most of the audio anyway.

Anonymous User - 19: Ross records the footage using the built-in Source Recorder, as mentioned above. It comes with every Source game so you don't have to pay. Secondly, Ross adds the dialogue in after the in-game acting, but I don't know at what point it is written.

Anonymous said...

Just out of curiosity is the new website almost done?

Anonymous said...

Man,you are a genius! CP and Freeman's Mind are the best Machinima i have ever seen

It would be great to have some english subtitles, since you got fans all around the world that dont know english so well and need to read it,but i think that would take more time...

So, take your time and keep it up ;)

Anonymous said...

Just a question to pass the time:

I wonder if there's a music player or something built into Freeman's suit. I mean, they have lasers and such at the facility, why not
MP3's (or at least some sorta prototype)? At least built into the hazard suit. Music while you work! Or while you kill a horde of evil aliens!

What kind of music would Gordon Freeman listen to? (Optimus Rhyme? ACDC? Oh! DragonForce!... maybe)

Really im just bored, but it would be interesting to hear what the people have to say.
