NEW VIDEO: GALAXY GULP

Well Noesis has given me the go-ahead to release the supplemental video to go with the tutorial, so here it is:

low quality (Youtube)

medium quality (86MB WMV)

It's a short comedy about a gas station in space with a variety of characters. The goal here was to create something funny using a whole range of the custom models Noesis already had available. Since they ranged from a skeleton and a dwarf to a robot and alien I tried to come up with an environment weird enough so that they wouldn't all seem out of place. I think it worked, I almost look at this as a video casserole.  Anyway, I hope you like it, and when the tutorial is done you'll hopefully be able to learn how we made this.

We're still planning one or two more promotional videos for the tutorial, though this is the main one. Meanwhile I'll still be working on the tutorial itself, so for better or worse, everything else is going to be on hold until then.
tened out.

Man, i check here every single day 2 times a day for CP and freemans mind. I love your work but i can't stand the wait...but then again the longer i wait the more better the video's will be. I guess ill check this out.

Anonymous said...

Wow this one was pretty good, new scene, alot of cool things thrown in to throw me off. Good job!

Ross Scott said...

Well I feel bad you're checking it here so often, I've just been so busy with other work I don't have more updates. I'm thinking about relocating the site actually, if that happens, then I'll try to have more frequent updates. Until then I'd say once a week is probably a better timeframe to check here.

This shows that nearly anything is possible in a machinima, it's only limited by ones imagination. Keep up the good work.

Good work Ross, but what about civil protection and freeman's mind? Are you still working on it?

Joe said...

The new show looks meh...its ok but a bit lacking but thats just my opinion

Ross Scott said...

miki: I plan to do more of CP and FM than ever before, but I have to finish this tutorial first.

joe: That's fine. This has a different style than my other stuff plus I found it tricky coming up with something to work all the models in.

Looking good. After I realized that it was the Combine's drink I was thinking "How is he drinking that?" and then one of the Combine actually asked how he is supposed to drink it. Priceless.

By the time you are done with the tutorial you will be at a whole new level of machinima making.

Bursoft said...

It's nice Ross. Good job. And I look forward to new CP and FM. Keep up good work.

Anonymous said...

Nice, I really liked it.

Would like more of this but dont forget about CP and FM. ;)

bllius said...

Nice. Where did you get the custom models?

Anonymous said...

Saw Galaxy Gulp a few days ago on Machinima.com. Your videos are great! Can't wait to see what you do next.

Otto said...

Haha, how so very random. :)

Anonymous said...

that was pretty good, but we are all still waiting for the day the next CP/Freemans mind comes out. Anyways keep up the good work

Well you were set a challenge and you met it well! A cool demonstration of what is possible with the source engine AND you made it funny. Good job on the voices! I totally thought yoda was a sound bite from one of the movies! :P

Anonymous said...

holy shit ross!!!! this is like the frigging funniest thing i'vs seen in a while!!!!!! ROFL "FIRE" and the cat fight in the store, you gotta make more of these man, lmfao!!!!

Anonymous said...

It's people like you that make me want to go into machinima for a living, Mr. Scott! Even though I know nothing about programming and Source engine implementation...

My compliments to whomever made that great music during the credits, by the way.

Anonymous said...

How was the drink and ice cubes part done in the beginning?

I did not know source engine could handle something that complex. And it looked great, reminded me of one of the James Bond intros.

Anonymous said...

Job well done. Dave was in there also! customer: That dwarf did it.
Dave: Get him!

Where's mike when you need him?

Mike: Vampire!

Ed said...

Another terrific episode!!!
Even though I think CP is the best, this 'Galaxy Gulp' is also hilarious! I'm looking forward to another fun episodes!
Keep up good work Ross!

P.S. Would you mind sending me the script file of this video please?
my mail adress is edward-g@hanmail.net.

If you are too busy now, you don't have to send it. I'll just wait. Thanx. :)

Anonymous said...

ya i did hear mike and dave iun there, my favorite characters were the dwarf, the skelaton and the guard "drinking" sodas, "hey guys, how do you drink thewse sodas?" (silence) lol

my opinion; when compare with FM and espacially CP, this is lame.. has been months i'm w8ing for new episode of CP

Unknown said...

=) that's a though criticism and that spam was unnecessary

Anonymous said...

Well, if you want to say the show was bad, then just say it was bad. You don't need to copy and paste thousands of SPAM. :(
Like Barış said, those SPAMs were unnecessary.

Ross Scott said...

I've enabled comment moderation for a while because some people were being childish and simply posting insults up here, either at me or each other. I've gone and deleted those posts. I won't delete anything related to criticism, but there's no reason to insult anyone.

bilius: They're all from Noesis, they were a big reason for making this the way it was.

Barış: I admit this is cornier than my usual stuff. More CP is coming, I've just been busy making the tutorial that goes with this and doing various oddjobs just to make money. After a day's worth of ditch-digging, you don't feel like sitting down to work on machinima.

Anonymous dude: I too, would like to go into machinima for a living.

AK-47: They're all giant func_physboxes with a glassy texture on them. It looked a lot better above water than below it.

I will say it in a more professional way

My Review:
Ross Scott the creator of the Half-Life2 based Show "Civil Protection" Ventures into a New area of Entertainment. This area isn't comedic but more of a Unusual style of machinima. The short is called "Galaxy Gulp" made as a tutorial to show what Valves Source engine can produce machinima wise.Rather then just releasing 3 different shorts with different characters. The Creator tries to combine em all into one short. The result is this. While he does succeed in showing us how the source engine can perform with its vast range of designs and animations. He succeeds little to minimal success to entertain the watcher. What we have is a short trying to bring a warrior & Dragon as characters that have no business in this short. The Title galaxy Gulp would consider it to be about space. Also stuff like the fight scene are ripped straight off cartoons.Scenes like the skeleton making some of tha corniest jokes ever fail to make me laugh.Stuff like The soldiers trying to figure out how to drink did seem to be the only funny thing in the short. But soldiers talking about investment plans isn't entertaining. The short failed to entertain me because it try to incorporate so many things and stuff that appears out of place it just ruins the whole experience.Side tracking with this a flat show like this instead of working on Civil Protection seems like a waste.I say nice job on showing us how cool the engine can be but needs work on the comedy

Ross Scott said...

I want you to know I was tempted not to put this review of yours up at all. Not because of the content, but because of your behavior prior to this.

You don't like the video, fine. You can criticize it all you want like you've done here. But please explain to me the reason for making multiple posts containing nothing but direct insults, then typing pages of "SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM" that I had to delete afterwards. If you don't, I'm not going to allow any more of your comments up here regardless of the content, since I don't enjoy playing babysitter if you can't act in a mature way.

Anonymous said...

Good work, and can't wait for more videos, Ross. Also, you do have a point. People insulting you over a tutorial video is pretty low AND sad. I would like to see people being better about this but we don't all have common sense.

THATS BETTER, (SRY FOR REACTING)

Anonymous said...

hey ppl, ya know after the dwarf guy gets shot out of a cannon, he hits freeman after he crashes through the window, i noticed if u pause it when the dwarf hits freeman, freeman seems to dissapear. so proves the no animation HEV model! SWEET!

P.S. did u do the voice for the dwarf? (mike)

Anonymous said...

I sorry but look at it from point of view. You see a guy who makes these great videos and he takes a long ass time to do it.Now I can understand its complicated but come on you spend time doing videos like Freemans mind which no Offense anyone could of done. You then do a fake Halo video which my friend actually thought was real (Saw what happened last april fools) so then you make this video called "Galaxy Gulp" which has tha most random stuff in it.Which also has diolog which could of been better again no offense but then I see stuff I seen in cartoons like the fighting scene. You have a dragon.I mean to be honest tha first time I saw it I sort of thought you were tripping on acid.Me and my friends love your videos but when we saw that stuff. We thought it was really shitty compared to your other videos. You have a lot of great talent but when you do videos like this which include a lot of random characters it doesn't really show you at your best. But thats just my thoughts

Anonymous said...

It would help if "Tha average Mfer" knew how to spell "the".

It was a tutorial video FOR GODSAKES!
IT DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE FUNNY!
Nice job Ross!

Anonymous said...

huh? Why has the vid been removed from noobtube?

Ridan Krad said...

Ross, I realize that this guy's comments can be discouraging, but I just want you to know he doesn't speak for all of us.

I thought it was great. My favorite bit was the CP guys standing around talking stocks. Hell, that bit practically was a mini CP episode, so I don't really understand the negative reactions.

Ross Scott said...

Tha Average Motherfucker: I deleted your last post because you started insulting people again. You've made it clear now that you don't want to behave in a mature way about this, so I'm turning comment moderation back on.

Sorry to everybody else, your posts will be delayed in the future before they appear since I'll have to clear them first.

Anonymous said...

That sux about tha comment moderation but I thought Galaxy Gulp was funny

Anonymous said...

I don't think the negativity is justified but it is predictable, given the length of time between episodes of CP. So a gap which is what...over 7 months now is frustrating for any fans of CP.

And because of this new project i can only imagine it further sets back any future episode of CP.

Maybe you should be a tad more clear to your fans on what your priorities really are.

That being said, i know quality when i see it and Galaxy Gulp is a fine (and funny) example of whats possible in the Source Engine.

Keep up the good work Mr Scott.

Joe said...

whats with people leaving piles upon piles of spam in the comments?

The Author said...

uh.............can you hurry up, leet world is way faster than you...

Ross Scott said...

anonymous: fair enough, my priorities are food and rent. Without that I can't make more episodes anyway.

andrew: I'd appreciate it if you aren't condescending, but I'll reply anyway. Leet World doesn't have to animate their characters the way I do. Some of the episodes I've worked on have totalled hundreds of hours to do because of that. The animation should be getting easier in the future, but right now I'm working about 10 - 12 hour days on this tutorial. Also I have 2 unfinished episodes of CP, which have soaked up a bunch of time, but I haven't released because they're unfinished. Once I get done with this tutorial things should start coming out faster.

Bursoft said...

Hey Ross, can you make a short trailer to CP? Ten seconds, nothing long.

Anonymous said...

well, it's not CP, but then agian I started coming here when the first freeman's mind came out, so I guess I can wait a little longer. Very funny and I would like to buy this tutorial program whenever it becomes avalible.

Bursoft said...

* I mean trailer to new episode of CP.

Ross Scott said...

bursoft: None of it's filmed yet, 90 - 95% of all the work for the episodes is pre-production. Once everything's ready to be filmed, it only takes about a day or two to make the episode anyway.

karanjhala guy: I think the guys at Noesis are having a problem compressing the high quality copy. I'm not sure what the holdup is, but they're the ones who have the final copy of it. I'm sure it will be on the DVD at least.

really nice one! unfortunately it satisfies my hunger for CP only a tad. but, i appreciate the work and there are some really funny moments. thank you, sir!

Anonymous said...

I felt this was sort of lacking potential however it was kind of funny and somebody said anyone can do freemans mind that may be true but i would like to see any one of you come up with such great dialogue ross you're doing a good job and the only thing i think anyone is really upset about is they have no idea what is coming up next because you never post what you,re doing I think everyone would hold back such harsh criticism if you just posted a little more often and explained what you're doing. Thanks for listening.

Just a thought but if your needing Soundtrack idea's you could do worse than to check out some of Nine Inch Nails latest Instrumental work. (nin.com) It's distributed Freely under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. So it's perfectly legal to use for a soundtrack.

Nice job on this video, but please don't distract yourself from your jewel series: CP and FM. I've been checking almost everyother day for an update since ep. 3 came out for freeman's mind. Keep up the good work.

Anonymous said...

I LOVED THE EPISODES ROSS KEEP IT UP!!!=D

Anonymous said...

Nice job on Galaxy Gulp.
For me, the "epic" fight scene and Yoda's appearence was hilarious.

Anonymous said...

Most of it was very good, although the skeleton's corny jokes kind of ruined it.

Anonymous said...

need update

Ross Scott said...

gamewinners: I didn't make the credits, that was Noesis, including some of the names they added.

mike & dave fan: after I done with this, I swear I'm going to focus on making more CP episodes

anonymous dude 1: This tutorial stuff has been going on for months, I plan to make a big effort towards getting more content out and more updates once it's done

anonymous dude 2: I almost used "Pilgrimage" by NIN (my favorite song by them) in Episode 2 when the Strider appeared actually. I probably will use it in another episode eventually.

anonymous dude 3: Unfortunately this will distract me from CP and FM, but once it's done I really want to get back to both of those.

other anonymous dude: I promise future material won't be as corny, that aspect was kind of an experiment

Anonymous said...

Dude! Its been nearly a month. we need some CP!

Anonymous said...

Ross I just want to say you have lost me as a fan.You haven't produced anything good anymore.I done visiting your site and watching Civil Protection and Freeminds which anyone could of done I mean seriously you could assigned 1 person to record & write diolog for it while you produce your CP episodes

Anonymous said...

Whats the ETA on CP or Freemans? DOnt mean to be pushy.

Anonymous said...

Hey! nolonger a guy or whatever your name is! Mr. Ross is under no obligation to do whatever his fans want! Remember that he's basically doing this for fun, on his own time, with little to no pay. Show him a little respect for creating CP and FM in the first place!

Moreover, random criticism like yours certainly won't help his work. Go ahead and stop being a fan if you want to, but put your head to good use and keep your comments to yourself!

Anonymous said...

Dude wtf why you making fun of him?I thought ross was keeping comments like your off this thing.I mean come on think about it this show is funny but like it loses its appeal when the production takes a really long time.So why don't you keep your comments to your self.I mean he is sorta right.Me and my friend thought anyone could do freemans mind considering how long it took (Expected like a Source Engine Machinima like CP) but when it was just a fps type demo well.I have HLSource and Xfire and windows movie maker I could make that right now if I wanted.I am just saying its understandable when people lose interest in something like this when he spends time doing stuff.I know he isn't obligated to do anything but at least he should consider some form of media he can release.Like team up with someone who can release something else while he does his shows and stuff.like to keep people into tha show.also maybe he should think of Ross Scott Productions or something instead of one CP site for one show but thats just my thoughts

Anonymous said...

keep your comments to your self? Are you a moron sir? I mean its called COMMENTS for a reason. This is a place for Feed back and for a good reason. It can help the creator figure out what to do and what his fans want from him.Mostly people want more episodes with out waiting as long.I think this needs more then one person behind it I mean you need something like RvB with comics or something to keep em interested like gaming news or something I mean site updates are so rare I vist only about once a month

Anonymous said...

I haven't seen a new CP since taht Holloween epdisode! The withdrawals are coming on strong

Anonymous said...

I think Ross Scott is one of the Best videogame movie makers on the web, and he deserves respect for what he does. I mean, I have no skills in makeing videos, but I understand how diffcult it is to make something as good as this.

I want to tell everybody to layoff on the bad comments, but I learned the hard way that its not possible.

Ross, You dont mind if I show your videos at LAN parties right?
