EPISODE 4: ON A RAIL

After numerous delays, here is Episode 4 at last. This one is clearly a step above the previous ones in terms of production quality and I hope everyone enjoys it. This episode has nice motion blur, mobile camera shots, scenic backgrounds, and more action than the previous 3 combined. This was originally meant to be Episode 5, but since the numbering is arbitrary anyway, it may as well be 4. I've switched the video hosting to filefront since I wouldn't have enough space for this on my student account. As always, there's the Youtube versions, but for this episode especially, it's worth getting the high quality copies.

If you missed my previous post, I was griping about how much time this took for things that I think could be expediated. For that reason, I'm putting the series on hold until I find a faster way of producing these. I'm not going to be aimless; I do have some ideas, they'll just take me time to research. I'll make another post here once I've started up again. Until then, don't wonder when the next episode is coming out because it's on hold for now. And finally, to engage in some shameless hint dropping, I DO have work right now, but it will not be steady, so the future is uncertain, though the same could be said for everyone.

This episode was definitely a lot more impressive in quality and what was going on. A lot of the camera shots were really nice. I found it quite dissapointing, though, in terms of length and amount of dialogue.

Awesome man! I loved it!

Wow, this episode really takes a different turn than the others. I noticed how for the first time, the characters actually went somewhere.

Usually the episodes are a two-way argument in some way between Mike and Dave, but this one gave me the special effects add on to it.

Gotta admit, the Shadow Guy and Vort cameo was pretty funny, as well as Mike paying no attention to the abstractly dressed (for an alien ruled dystopia) GMan.

And, the end was uber pwnage. I rewound it several times just to see Mike and Dave get owned by their own short attention spans.

Though in the end, I felt it was a bit too short compared to all the others, and didn't have any of Dave's or Mike's one-liners I was hoping for. I know it's kinda hard to say when you've done all that work, but I feel there was little conversation except for the beginning and end.

All in all, you've done it again, and I mean that in a good way. I totally cannot wait for when you start the series up again!

I must comment on how awesome this episode is!
I loved the use of Half-Life 2 maps, and the ending was gold.

It was very impressive, even though Dave had some buggy animations, due to the moving train, but there isn't a whole lot you can do about that.

But keep up the good work!

Ahh, watched it some more, hehe, Love that ending.

Even knew it was comeing and it cought me by suprise. :-D

I am So looking forward to next episode, if you make it anyway. And defanitly willing to help on any mapping needed.

Though this ep was Awsum I think I still like #1 the most. Maybe because it's just the first one I saw.
Thanks again for all the laughter.
Hehe. :-}

It is finally out, it was like waiting for halflife2.

aaron: I'm trying to have a variety with these. This one will appeal much more to some people than 2 does. If it's any consolence, my idea for Ep. 5 (when I get this going again) will be focused especially on the writing and who knows how long it will be. And I'd love to make these longer, but it was a lot of work to get those 6 minutes that I had.

karasu: thanks man, I have tons of different ideas like this

calix: Yeah Mike's mind was elsewhere at the moment. And yeah, this one didn't have as much conversation. It's weird some people complain about the lengthy conversations like there was in 2, but again, I want to have variety. Part of the reason I focused on the action so much this time was because I barely had any in the previous episodes, so this was partially to show that I COULD do action.

Oh and don't feel bad about criticizing my stuff. You can tear my films apart here as long as you're not a jerk about it. Really as long as someone's not posting outright insults, I'll put it up here. I only have this censorship thing on to weed out pharmaceutical ads.

Nicadeamas: Yeah, the ending was predictable, but I don't think most people foresaw it playing out in that fashion. (Mike is a bad luck magnet by the way). As for liking #1, that's cool, I'm trying to cover humor from a couple different angles.

Anonymous said...

i am speechless absolutely fantastic camera angles you using pointveiw_control geuss who's gettin more emails !!!!!!! just awsome though... I gotta say though I was waiting for the normal show humor and I thought this was only a test of the cameras for this one episode... to try something different and then the end came along and I started to crack up GOOD JOB!!!

can you give us the name of ep 5

Ahaha! That was totally awesome! I watched it again and again, that train ride was fantastic. Awesome work, Ross!

Poor Mike.

Loved the ending, overall good episode and enjoyable. Didn't really like the long train ride, I know, main point. Good use of camera angles, well done custom map. You know, I came here because I downloaded the third back in like march, it is now june 25th and I came back just in time :). Keep up the good work, if you need an editor, I'm your man :). my email is nighthawk3729@gmail.com

This episode was excellent, absolutely worth the long wait.

Funny, creative and beautiful.

After seeing it i'm no longer surprised it took this long. Fantastic camera angles, animation and custom mapping. However i think you flopped on the easiest thing (in my oppinion): humor. Until now it was a lot more inteligent (not joking) and original. Of course, the way Mike hit the train was genious :)), but the rest of the episode lacked. The train sequence was great, great action and perfect music, even without the "damn composer". If you can succeed in walking the line between humor/story and action, you are THE MAN. That's exactly what you did in the first episode. And i still laugh my ass of at that one, even though i saw it a LOT of times.

In all, the episode was ok, but dissapointing from the lack of humor.
OH! I really really really loved the part when Mike enumerated differen chinese foods. That was genious :))) For me, that's the funniest part. Good work, and good luck on the next episode. I'll be watching every day! :)

Amazing! To bad that episodes 5 future is very unpredictable :P

Great job man! It was totally worth the waiting by my opinion, keep up the superb work adn all the best to you.

Tom Edwards said...

No wonder this one took so long. :-) Great work.

I tried looking in to the leg IK problem but I can't reproduce it. The legs jerk once when the train starts, but after that they're steady...

Ross Scott said...

gaylord: I didn't follow everything you said, but it sounds positive

richard: all the more reason for me to improve my methods so I can get these out faster

fatmanjim: I haven't decided myself, it will cover a variety of topics. Even then, it depends, I kind of like keeping things a surprise until they're done.

otto: poor Mike, what about poor Dave? I mean Mike's obviously alive at the end of the episode, whereas Dave is down for the count one way or another. At the very least he has a concussion.

kevin: Well I tried to keep the trainride interesting with the interlude, the scanner following him, and his jump, but I appreciate that not everybody will be as interested in the action, or else would need a lot more.

kai: thanks man. I'm in disagreement about it being worth the wait, but at least I have more to show for the wait this time.

d.ex: Well they can't all be home runs. I admit, I was more focused on the "awe" factor for this one, but I tried to have some funny bits. I DEFINITELY have episode ideas like what you just described, it's just a matter of getting these out and deciding which idea to do next.

tori and anonymous dude: thanks again people

I loved it. Really, I think your series can easily beat War of the Servers in quality and humor, but the scale would probably be way to much for what your doing.

By the way, I just saw your name on the Shadows of the Dead trailer. Just wondering what that was about, because you and the MC(now Lit Fuse) guys could make some of the best machinima ever.

P.S. I got to feel bad for Mike because he always seems to get beaten in every episode except the 3rd. First kicked in the lower region, then kicked by a strider, and now drops on a train. I don't think I could get payed to do those kind of stunts.

Ross Scott said...

colbertsoldier: I just watched War of The Servers and while the post-production runs circles around mine, I don't think I'm enough of a Gmod nut to really appreciate it. I could definitely write a movie-length feature (and have an idea for one that's not CP), but yeah I would need to figure out some serious shortcuts with production (and get a bigger hard drive).

Oh and here's the story on Shadows of the Dead. Zachariah Scott (no relation) was basically in charge of that and he came to me asking for voice acting help, so I gave him a bunch of samples, revoiced the lines doing different accents he wanted. He had about page's worth of lines for me to do and emphasized getting several in on time since he was doing a time crunch. Lo and behold, on the day that he finishes it he changes his mind and throws out over 90% of my dialogue (not because of my performance, he said it was great), and then just leaves in 2 of my lines. So I'm kind of annoyed about that. I mean I understand not using every line that's recorded, but throwing out over 90% of the lines that you specifically asked for is kind of lame. Anyway, I don't know who does the radio voice, I only do the first 2 lines, the "in a world..." etc.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I guess you need to be into Gmod to really get into WotS. The only benifit for you in it is that you can have your player model run around with no weapon. But for what your doing, there's not much there.

bob said...

I liked it. The 4 months of hype may have had my expectations a bit high (really high). But None the less I was impressed. I guess that was the map you made for a whole month. I noticed the head and hand reactions were much faster.

I am telling you man. You don't have to kill yourself to make this a great machinima. They don't have to train surf every ep. Just make the dialog funny and add a few more recurring characters. Remember south park and the Simpson are still on the air because there are 1000 characters. Eventually mike and dave will have nothing else to say. It is time they met Steve.. the creepy hardcore CP.

Take your break and come back rested and better informed.

bllius said...

Nice job man.

How did you get the scanner to track along at the same rate as the train?

Anonymous said...

That was hilarious.

Katana said...

You certainly did a lot more in this one...at times it was a bit boring to just watch Dave on the train, but it was still worth it to see all the stuff that happened. Loved the G-man part as well.

Oh yeah, I updated the Source Developer Wiki for you.

Fantastic work, I laughed my ass off at the end and the train ride was quit exhilarating, though you may have dwelt on it just tad too long. But only a tad.

Hey, in the future, do you think we'd see a new main character? Perhaps the Shadow Dude (as I named him) joins Civil Protection? I could see a more interesting line of conversation developing from this, three-way instead of the usual two-way. If I were to suggest a name, lol, to go along with the four lettered named duo, John.

It doesn't have to be that, however. It could be some completely new guy off the top of your head. I just think a new main char addition would be neat, it'd provide more length to the episodes.

As for a full-length movie, I hoe you'd wait until you've really gotten into the series. That way we have some depth to cover before then.

Ross Scott said...

Wow, more stuff (these comments are the poor man's forum, if you haven't noticed)

f12bwth: Yeah, I'm sorry for hyping it. Part of the problem was that this wasn't my original idea for 4, I was going to pull a lot crazier stuff for that one (and still will, but I'm putting it off).

Oh and there are easier ideas I could have done, but they're not THAT much easier. I had multiple mapping offers, so I was ideally hoping I would barely have to do any mapping for this episode, even though that didn't happen at all, so that added a lot of delays to it. Also, since the series has been kind of static so far, so I didn't want people to think every episode was going to be the same. I think I was kind of past due for having an episode like this.

Concerning characters and ideas for the episode, etc: I have PLENTY of ideas, I ALREADY have ideas for different characters. I have ideas for at least 20 different episodes at this point. I appreciate the gesture, but I don't think I'm lacking in the imagination department for this. The problem is you only have these few episodes to judge things by, which goes back yet again, to me getting these out faster so you can see what ideas I already have in mind. And even if I wasn't planning for more primary characters, I point yet again to Aeon Flux (the show), an example of something fresh which has only 2 consistent characters in the episodes.

billius: it's not a real scanner, it's a dynamic prop on a traintrack. I gave up on the real ones, the damn things are like gremlins.

david: thanks again for everything, you've been the most dependable assistance I've had so far

stormtrooper: I'll need aftereffects for one of my episode ideas, but not yet.

calix: I have no plans right now for an additional main character, just possibly reoccuring characters. My plans for episode 5 could have a dialogue exchange with quite a few characters however. And no worries, I'm not starting a movie anytime soon, this short episodes are hard enough as it is.

everybody else: thanks again

Anonymous said...

Okay, after watching this episode i can tell you what other machinma artist do diffrent to be faster ... they don't go mad at tech and mapping.

Don't get me wrong, it's all hats off for that piece of art you did there, but, well, to give you an honest and critical feedback: it wasn't quite what i was expecting.

I think what i like most about CP are the charakters and the dialog, but that came a little short this time.

The maps and the tech were excellent, but as a viewer i don't really think i need to see 300 new maps in one episode. So maybe you can use some of them again.

But thats just my taste and opinion and really i don't want to pull you down. I love that shit.

Anonymous said...

This episode is BEST! Civil Protection is SUPER !

Ross Scott said...

This was the only episode that had extensive mapwork. The others had modified maps, but it was a minimal effort. If I didn't have to do the map for 4, it would have been out faster than 2.

seizuretastic said...

that was awesome. The action, effects, and especially the camera work were great. That was fun.

Anonymous said...

As for maps, I think perhpas you should have a huge collection of City 17 maps and maps for other places, so you can use them again in later episodes. I mean, C17 is big, but it's not infinite, so you don't have to worry about having a new aweomse map to impress everyone with every single episode.

Ask for other mappers. I mean, if you can get five guys working on one map for you, then they're goiong to get it out five times faster than you did for EP. 4(5).

Also, try hiring a lot more programmers, just dictate to them what you want to do. Things can (and will) take forever if youu work alone or with only a few people here and there. I know, I've dealt with it.

I don't think there's any faster way to produce something, as well as extend the length of it, than to have a whole crew of guys there to help you in creating more episodes.

Just a little advice to help you get going is all. :)

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry, the Anyonymous post or whoever it called it about hiring people was by me, Silver Calix.

Sorry for the confusion, accidentlaly hit the wrong button...

Calix: I plan on employing more help, especially now that I realize I'll probably need more people than I'll think to account for some getting too busy or bailing during the process. The thing is, you still have to be understanding with this, since it is volunteer work, it's not like I can pay anybody anything.

Anonymous dude: Yeah, the high quality link should be off to the right. You can get it off Filefront. Anybody can download this, I just can't sell anything, then I'd get in trouble.

Yesterday, I downloaded and watched all 4 episodes.

WOW.

The writing and acting are just top-shelf here. I really was belly-laughing when the scanner finally whacked itself in the tunnel. And the Ninja business in "Friday" - phenomenal.

The "problem" I see in machinima right now is the same one that existed in sf/action gaming for a long time - everybody thinks they can write, or think the story is unimportant as long as you put enough explosions on screen. (Also sounds like Hollywood, doesn't it?) You, sir, have managed to bridge both gaps, but I sense a level of frustration with the technical side. As good as you are, I hope you can get some help there, not for improvement's sake, but so you can focus on what seems your core talent, and the core of any story: the writing. And let's be honest, this show would be great if it was done with StickMan Animation.

I'd really like to see more and more people get to their core talent and work together to bring more ideas to machinima. As you point out, it's frustrating to spend a month or more to get a few minutes on 'film'. Me, I'd rather spend the time writing and editing, or even just doing titles. (Huh. I love to do titles, for some reason.)

Well, great stuff. I hope to see more "Friday" episodes; that's going to be a great recurring gag.

Oh, I was going to suggest that, until you get a team that can cut back on your production time, don't worry about new maps and such. These guys are going to be funny no matter where you plop 'em down. Headcrab-catching detail in Breen's office comes to mind....heheheee.

Ross Scott said...

stormtrooper: I downloaded them off Interplay's site a couple years ago

gary: yeah, I like how I got to mislead people with the music for the end

inspectah deck: Ah, you can figure it out.

anonymous dude: No, the series is on hold until after I research different techniques for making this.

robert: Wow, thanks man. I've had similar thoughts, but it means nothing coming from myself since every machinima maker tends to think their own stuff is good. And yeah, my favorite part of this is in writing/editing. I am frustrated by the technical end; I'm convinced you have to have obsessive-compulsive disorder to enjoy animating (which I do not unfortunately). I really do have some ideas to expediate the process and I hope to get even more help from others when I start the next episode. Oh and don't worry, I eventually have plans for a "Next Friday".

Anonymous said...

"Next Friday" woohoo! :)

I hope you're taking notes on what you figure out as you attempt to speed up and smooth out the process, because I'm right with you on the technical side of this.

Well, FacePoser's decided it just wants to crash today, so I dunno...argh.

Ah, a couple more comments: one thing I believe is that comedy is universal, so I sent my sister (knows nothing of HL) a link to "Friday" - she said it was funny (and well done).

Then, after reading some more around here, I learned "Friday" won Best In Show at Machinimasia (that Kung Fu gimmick's a show-stopper). So.....I looked around at the bigger machinima sites and hunted down a handful of 'big' machinimas. "Meh" is all I've got to say. (Maybe avante-garde bs isn't my cup of tea).

Anyway, it's good to see the quality stuff rising to the top in a sea of frag-monkey videos. :) :)

For your concerns of this taking so long.

This one took along time because you had lots of background and fancy camera angles. I can see you saved some time by using a few sections from the Campaign, but if you could get the help of someone who's good at the actually map making, it would go a lot faster. I love making towns, especially urban areas, with the editor for Morrowind, and I can be bored, and by the end of the night be done with a cool little town which I never do anything with again. That's a long winded way to say, get someone who likes doing it and is skilled(or can get more goodlier)for some help and the episode production will be a lot shorter.

The animation problems and longness was because it was small details, and I'm guessing it's hard to make a guy stand still on a moving objects, and making his actions noticeable on a moving and color-changing background.

And I forgot what I was going to say...

Pretend I said something really smart after this.

This is probably the second best episode so far. Friday is still my fav but this got close, though.

I sure wish I could help you but I'm not that good of a mapper, at least not yet. But If there pops up new skills and people you need I might ask.

The series is friggin' hilarious and I wish there will come a dozen more, but seeing you have imagination and lots of ideas ready I think it will not be problem though, as long as you get the help you need.

Animations are good, voices fit perfectly, so does music, and it's good in my opinion, but those aren't the main points. Even if this was written on paper I'd still laugh my ass off.

I wish there was some intense fighting/shooting episode once, I'd love to see them getting blown up and going all badass and shooting stuff. I really hope you will make one some day. Though the series is good as it is, I have nothing to complain about really, except for Dave's stuttering on Episode 4 where he's train surfing, but I guess that wasn't fixable.

And, believe me or not but this series is probably better than any movie I've seen so far. And the best thing is that it will probably get better ( if it can get any better than this ) in the future, now when you are setting up a crew and getting all sorten out.

One thing that makes go a little ? is how well you managed to inpersonate that Vortigaunt on Ep 4. My first reaction was something along lines '' I've never heard that sentence before, what the hell? ''

But if we put all this ass licking and stuff in one nutshell: I admire your work and I'd like to help, but since I'm no good at mapping or stuff, I can't. But good thing is that you wont even need my help anyway, since you have all sorten ( at least from judging from the looks of it ) out.

Keep up the good work man and best of luck, I'm looking forward to seeing Episode 5!

Ross Scott said...

I do have plans for some more action-intensive episodes, but not for a while because those are harder to animate. As for the vortigaunt voice, I figure if the game is going to give him an islander accent, I don't think it's out of line to give him a street bum voice. If you like some episodes better than others, that's a good thing, I want to have a variety in these. Unfortunately 5 will be close to the total opposite of 4, but I have more ideas.

Episode 4 was pretty intense, Man! I really enjoyed it. Loved the part at the very end!

Oh btw, I think your next episode should involve headcrabs. lol

anonymous Spanish dude: this map is not optimized at all, it was really chugging on my machine. I'm not sure what you'd use it for.

anonymous Korean dude: Well, I don't speak Korean, but I do plan to make more episodes! I can also help explain any slang if somebody wants to translate.
